Shoal Creek Residence

Shoal Creek is a courtyard residence designed around a magnificent existing pecan tree and organized to respond to Austin’s demanding climate.

Entering from the west on a busy road, the house presents as a protective two story wall, blocking intense afternoon sun, buffering street noise, and shading the interior courtyard throughout the day. Regional cypress, local limestone, and light colored metal panels reference neighborhood vernacular through an abstracted 257 inch coursing pattern found on dozens of surrounding homes, applying traditional proportions to contemporary materials.

Strategic roof overhangs and vertical wood fins moderate sun without sacrificing views, while a screened porch captures cooling southeast breezes. Built for a judge and her Swedish partner with extended stay guest quarters for family from Dallas and Sweden, the design initially sparked neighborhood concern before explanation of its climatic reasoning and contextual references won converts, demonstrating how thoughtful architecture can expand what a community expects from new buildings.
