Ranchland is a residence for a content creator designed around a single question: what makes architecture belong exclusively to its site?
After rejecting an initial scheme that “could be anywhere,” the design evolved into a crescent-and-noodle configuration driven entirely by Austin’s climatic realities. The crescent sits on true cardinal orientation, its curve calculated to welcome southern sun while blocking the harsh northwest light of summer evenings and hot northeast mornings.
Overlaying this climate-responsive base, a dynamic linear mass organizes living spaces into an experiential sequence discovered through careful study of how rooms wanted to relate. The result challenges expectations—architecture that doesn’t resemble other work in the portfolio or the regional vernacular, yet couldn’t exist anywhere else or in any other form.
