You probably know us for our homes. That’s usually where the conversation starts. And it makes sense—our residential work is intimate, expressive, and deeply tied to the lives of the people we design for. But what often gets overlooked is the commercial side of our practice, which, for me, is just as compelling—and just as personal.

Our commercial projects don’t always make the same splash in the press, but they carry a different kind of weight. They’re about serving many rather than one, shaping not just how someone lives, but how communities move, gather, and experience space together. That challenge has always fascinated me.

It’s true: the constraints are real. There are tighter budgets, faster timelines, more layers of approval. But those constraints demand clarity—and clarity is where good design thrives. In many of our commercial projects, it’s not about layering idea upon idea. It’s about identifying one bold move that defines the space and carries everything else with it.

I think about the Austin Country Club, where we were able to bring a quiet sense of modernity to a long-respected institution without disrupting its rhythm. Or the Westwood Country Club Marina, where the design needed to feel effortless, almost invisible—blending into the lakeside setting while solving some very specific functional challenges. And then there’s Webber Village—a concept for an urban village that never got built, but was ahead of its time. It was about walkability, density, shared space, and the idea that great design could make daily life more connected. That project still informs how I think about citymaking today.

People sometimes assume we care more about residential because that’s what we’re known for. But the truth is, our commercial work is rooted in the exact same values. We listen. We edit. We solve problems by shaping space with purpose. The difference is in scale—not in care.

So yes, we’ll always love designing homes. But the work we do beyond the backyards matters just as much to us. And if you’ve only seen that part of the story, I’d love to show you the rest.
